While there are some outliers, we ultimately discovered more similarities than differences. The real nuance from provider to provider and from plan to plan is how nicely, rates, fees, and discounts play with your home’s typical energy use. In that way, picking an energy plan is a lot like picking a credit card.

Take advantage of a competitive energy rate that’s locked in for an entire year. The world’s first public electricity supply was provided in late 1881, when the streets of the Surrey town of Godalming in the UK were lit with electric light. This system was powered from a water wheel on the River Wey, which drove a Siemens alternator that supplied a number of arc lamps within the town. This supply scheme also provided electricity to a number of shops and premises to light 34 incandescent Swan light bulbs.
Navigating Choppy Waters: Marine Bunker Fuel in a Low Sulfur, Low Carbon World In 2002, Texas legislators deregulated the Houston electricity rates market. Now, Houston’s 2.1 million plus residents have the opportunity to shop for electricity supply plans from a variety of competitive retail electric providers (REPs). When you compare electricity supply prices, you may find that Just Energy in Houston offers a plan that fits the needs of your home or business.

To avoid signing up for a plan with unreasonable fees, be sure to read the Electricity Facts Label and the Terms of Service. It’s a lot to take in, but failure to do so could cost a lot in the long run. Biedrzycki said if it seems overwhelming, just keep an eye out for numbers – and read what’s around them.

  9. Keeping on top:  With deregulation, a whole host of electric resellers jumped into the market because there’s a whole lot of electricity to sell:  if Texas were a country, it’d be the 11th largest electricity consumer in the world!  Just by itself, it uses as much electricity as Spain or Great Britain!  That means there’s a whole lot of information you have to find, absorb, and process to make sure you’re getting the best rate for your needs.

  12. The problem is that across Africa, the vast majority of the power utilities are effectively bankrupt. Another World Bank study (pdf) on African Utilities shows that only two of the 39 African utilities surveyed, in the Seychelles and Uganda, were able to generate enough cash to cover both their operating costs and capital expenditures necessary to invest in the maintenance and expansion of the grid. In fact, only 19 of the 39 companies were able to generate enough cash to cover their day-to-day operating costs. It means the rest were not even able to pay everyday costs, like salaries, in full.

The mid to late 1880s saw the introduction of alternating current (AC) systems in Europe and the U.S. AC power had an advantage in that transformers, installed at power stations, could be used to raise the voltage from the generators, and transformers at local substations could reduce voltage to supply loads. Increasing the voltage reduced the current in the transmission and distribution lines and hence the size of conductors and distribution losses. This made it more economical to distribute power over long distances. Generators (such as hydroelectric sites) could be located far from the loads. AC and DC competed for a while, during a period called the War of Currents. The DC system was able to claim slightly greater safety, but this difference was not great enough to overwhelm the enormous technical and economic advantages of alternating current which eventually won out.[1]
