After spending so much time and energy with energy companies, I figure I should pass this info onto the internet world (within Houston). I am a Centerpoint Energy resident (you don’t get to choose the electricity provider you have; it’s based on where the electricity is provided). I think Houston is predominantly a Centerpoint energy area (correct me if I’m wrong).

Energy deregulation has been in place for several years however there are still a lot of people who are confused or who have not fully understand the implications, structure, details and workings of energy deregulation. Many simply know that energy deregulation means people now have the power to choose their electric companies – a diversion from the previous system where a single utility company provides services for the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity.
The bulk of the shortfall, around 4,300 megawatts, comes from the shutdown of three coal-fired plants by the state’s largest power company, Vistra Energy of Dallas. Vistra said the plants were no longer profitable after years of low electricity prices and competition from lower-cost natural gas plants and wind energy projects.

Amazon Alexa There’s no transparency when it comes to purchasing energy. When you plug in to charge your phone, you don’t know if it’s going to cost you twice, or even three times what you think it will. How much do you need to put aside in order to pay for your electric bill when it comes knocking? Who knows. You might as well be buying a car and telling the seller, “Charge me whatever you want.”

Lock in a rate for 24 months Advertise فارسی Here are my 2 cents about electric companies when shopping around for the best rates. Currently, the average cents/kWh in Houston is 10 cents, after speaking to a very helpful, very informative Green Mountain Energy representative. Although their rates are a little higher than my current rates, they have FANTASTIC customer service (which is almost worth it). The GME rep even recommended that I stick with what I am using now since it’s cheaper.

Currently, the urine-powered fuel cell can generate around 2 watts per cubic meter of energy, which is about enough to power a cellphone, but the team is working on improving the design, and the researchers said they are confident they will be able to increase the fuel cell’s performance.

As the third-largest coal-producing state in the nation, a sizable portion of everyone’s electricity comes from coal, regardless of the plan type you choose. But times are changing: Pennsylvania’s Alternative Energy Portfolio Standard requires that 18 percent of all electricity sold by 2021 be sourced from renewable energy. The state subsidizes the increase of renewable energy, and by opting for a green plan, your electricity payments do the same.

  4. SEE RATES →
If you are currently in a contract with an electric provider that will last through August, you probably won’t feel much of the impact. If your contract is expiring anytime now through August or you are on a variable rate plan, you need to sign a fixed-rate contract now.

Minimum Usage Fees: Often set at or around 1,000 kWh/month, these fees mean you’ll always pay for at least that amount — even if you only use, say, 800 kWh of electricity some months. It sounds nasty, but it’s only something to be concerned about if your electricity bills historically show you hover right around that minimum use threshold. If you’re electricity use always exceeds that amount, it’s like it’s not even there.

Most of Direct Energy’s plans allow you to earn Plenti points — you get 1,000 as soon as you sign up. That initial windfall is about as good as it gets. You keep accumulating rewards with every payment, but just one point for every dollar you spend on supply charges (what you pay to Direct Energy vs. your EDC — so about two-thirds of your total bill). A Plenti point equates to about one cent, so that 1,000 point bonus works out to $10 when you cash it in with a Plenti merchant (Rite Aid, Macy’s, etc.) You’d have to spend a further $1,000 in supply charges before making off with another $10.00 in Plenti points.
