JD Schmidt, a managing partner at CSD consultancy, said power supplies could become even tighter and prices higher if plants have malfunctions. The combination of deferred maintenance and the stress of running full-tilt during summer months makes that likely, he said.

Safety Tips Call 877.653.5090 Correction:  The Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which operates about 90 percent of the state’s power grid, has braced for potential shortages and price spikes since late last year, when it determined that Texas would enter the summer with 7,200 fewer megawatts of power than expected because of plant closings, temporary shutdowns and delays in the completion of natural-gas and wind generating projects. (One megawatt is enough to power 200 homes on a hot Texas day.)

These things may seem small, but they add up over time. And in reality, it’s not even about saving money as much as it is about knowing how much you’re spending at any given time. The way things are now, you don’t have the power to know what you’re actually paying to charge your phone, start the dishwasher, or turn down the air conditioner just a few degrees.

Just Energy’s style of Contract Summaries doesn’t make it easy to parse out exact details, leaving blank spaces where rate and term length info should appear. On the third page, you’ll find densely typed Terms and Conditions that confusingly conflate Just Energy’s natural gas and electricity plans. It’s heavy on the legalese but light on the data that you’ll want to nail down before making a purchasing decision, like rate. We couldn’t get a clear price or explanation on what happens after commitment without enrolling in a plan.
Ryan Holterhoff, public affairs officer for Grant County PUD, said that the utility has outstanding requests for approximately 500 megawatts, saying it was “about an 85 percent increase over our current average load.”

Encompassing over six hundred square miles, the city stands as the fifth most popular metropolitan area in the country and gets its name from the commander who won Texas’ independence from Mexico in 1836. The city lies in the southeastern portion of the state within a deregulated power market and as such, allows residents to select an energy provider from the various service companies that serve the state.

Enrollment Variable Rate Plans: Designed as month-to-month contracts, these plans are in total control of your energy provider, which can shift the price you pay per kWh at its discretion. This means you, the consumer, are in a better place to reap the benefits when the energy market falls — but it also means you’re at risk for hikes in prices, whether as a result of natural disasters or the provider’s bottom line. Variable plans always offer a full year of price history to show the average price per kWh so you can get a sense of what you’re getting into (like this one from Reliant) and know this: Variable plans don’t have cancellation fees. You can cut your service at any time — a huge incentive for REPs to keep their prices reasonable.
