There are many different options for term lengths in the Texas energy market. Different term lengths often have different price points, so if you’re more flexible with the length of your contract, you could get a cheaper rate. Contracts with shorter term lengths are great if you prefer to avoid a long-term commitment while longer contracts usually provide the benefit of longer-term price stability.

Even then, you’d still save $34. Moral of the story: With cancellation fees this small, it’s worth it to go with the lower rate, longer term plan.

Electricity is deregulated in two Canadian provinces: Ontario and Alberta. Both markets showed price spikes in the first year of dereguation, but then settled down into a volatile but reasonably stable environment. Alberta’s market is dominated by fossil fuel generation and as such reacts more closely to the price of natural gas. Ontario’s generation mix is about 50% nuclear.[1]

Iowa[edit] Read Review In summary, fixed-rate plans provide a level of certainty and stability in your energy charge since the price will not fluctuate over the life of your contract. If prices suddenly spike, you are protected because your rate is locked in. The flip side is that if rates drop over the life of your contract, you’ll be stuck paying the higher rate. You can incur steep cancellation fees if you change electricity plans or providers before the end of your contract term.

Most Texas electricity companies offer fixed kWh rate plans. Basically, you sign a contract from anywhere between six months to up to five years and lock in your rate for the duration of the term. In most cases, you’ll end up saving money over the long haul because, in general, energy rates have been rising over the past 20 years. Pro tip: getting a fixed kWh rate also protects you from sudden price hikes due to market fluctuations.

Variable Rate Plans: Designed as month-to-month contracts, these plans are in total control of your energy provider, which can shift the price you pay per kWh at its discretion. This means you, the consumer, are in a better place to reap the benefits when the energy market falls — but it also means you’re at risk for hikes in prices, whether as a result of natural disasters or the provider’s bottom line. Variable plans always offer a full year of price history to show the average price per kWh so you can get a sense of what you’re getting into (like this one from Reliant) and know this: Variable plans don’t have cancellation fees. You can cut your service at any time — a huge incentive for REPs to keep their prices reasonable.

Energy sellers must provide collateral to ERCOT to cover expected future costs of buying wholesale electricity and if the companies don’t have enough capital, they get shut down. Breeze Energy, a Dallas-based electricity retailer that sold wind-energy plans to 9,800 customers including many in the Houston area, got caught in that financial squeeze when it defaulted on its collateral obligations.
